Everybody wants a wooden wick candle because of the cozy crackling sound that it makes when burning. Unfortunately, the excitement usually slows down after the first burn when you cannot light it up anymore. Contrary to popular belief, one does not light a wooden wick the same way one lights a regular cotton wick. Not to worry, Atelier Amande specializes in wooden wick candles and we’ll give you all our tips and tricks to make your candle last as long as possible.
Tilt your candle
Unlike a regular cotton wick, the wooden wick needs a bit more attention. To light a wooden wick candle you first need to tilt your candle to an approximate 45-degree angle and light your wick as close to the wax as possible. Lighting the candle from the base of the wick and letting the flame travel across the wood will help the fire feed off the wax. Be patient, as it might take a few seconds or a couple of tries for the wood to ignite properly.
Then there was fire
Don’t blow out the flame if it doesn't catch immediately. It will take a couple of tries. Once lit, the wooden wick should crackle softly, creating a pleasant and soothing atmosphere. Mood and scent are closely linked, which make almond based scented candles ideal for relaxation, mood enhancement, and stress relief.
Tips for a long-lasting burn:
- The all-important first burn: to avoid the candle "tunneling," ensure that you extinguish the candle only after the entire top layer of wax has melted.
- Wick maintenance: trim the wooden wick to about ¼ inch before you light it again. You can simply break off any charred bits from previous burns with your fingers if you don’t have the tools.
- Keeping it straight: as the candle burns, make sure that it is on a flat surface. That way when the wax becomes cool again, your wick will not drown in the now cold wax. It will be easier to light it again afterwards.
